Pondering With a Purpose

It's Thursday! One of my favorite days. Time to do a little "pondering" with Brenda from Ponderings of an Author.

Her rules are really easy:

1. Grab the Pondering with a Purpose Badge (in her sidebar)
2. Look at the week's prompt
3. Post something on your blog that relates to the prompt - it can be a story, a poem, a picture -- anything you want it to be.
4. Go back here and add the URL from your post to the linky list on Brenda's.
5. Go check out the other bloggers who have added their links to the list.
6. AND most of all.... Have fun!

This Week's prompt:  Stretch

Sorry but have to go off topic this morning. Had a very long, stressful night last night that started with a phone call from daughter who said "I hope you're ready to meet your grandson" and then started bawling. They had to take the baby - right then. I didn't even make it to the hospital before they took her back. But all is well! He came out screaming - lungs are ok. So far everything is good. 4 pounds, 5 oz, 17 inches long. I'll give you the whole story later.

Hodgepodge

Welcome back to the Wednesday Hodgepodge! Be sure to add your link to the bottom of Joyce's post and then go visit the neighbors. After all, that's part of the fun!

1.  When were you last facing an ocean? Using just ONE word, describe how you felt as you faced that ocean. It's been a long time, probably 20 years. In one word - I felt SMALL.

2. What are three sounds you hate to hear? Tornado sirens, a child crying in pain, and a phone in the middle of the night.

3. This question comes to you courtesy of some real life friends. Hi real life friends! When you shop for yourself, do you try everything on in the store before buying or do you buy, try on at home, and then return what you don't like or what doesn't fit? Try on at home - hate trying on clothes in a store.

4. February 26th is National Pistachio Day...are you a fan of the little green nut? Do you use them in cooking and baking or prefer to eat them right out of the shell? Not really a fan.

5. When did you last have to compromise with someone?  Were you happy to reach the compromise or slightly irritated it was necessary? I compromise all the time and it's just a part of life - you can't have everything your way.

6.  Have you ever written a letter to an elected official? Did you get a response? I send emails to officials at times and have gotten a few responses.

7. We 'March' into a new month at the end of this week...what's something on your March calendar guaranteed to make you smile? My garden!

8.  Insert your own random thought here.Vacation day today - yesterday was a snow day. I kind of feel guilty for not being at work this morning but I wanted today off to prepare for my audit tomorrow. Wish me luck.

Chats on the Farmhouse Porch

It's time to head over to Patrice's porch for the weekly chat. Welcome to the new participants in the chat!

Questions
1. Is there a room in your home that you'd like to redecorate or remodel? Still working on the kitchen - it has a way to go.
2. Did you watch the Oscars? o - just not into watching much TV.
3. How many pair of blue jeans do you own? Lots - in all sizes - from 2s all the way to 12s. Sadly, I'm now wearing the larger ones.
4. What was your favorite toy as a child? My bike - does that count as a toy? We really didn't have lots of toys when I was a kid. That was back in the days when we played outside all day long.
5. If you could visit a country in Europe, which would you choose? England of course!

Coffee Chat

Time for the Coffee Chat! If you'd like to join, head over to Leslie's at Time out for Mom.

The topic is: Some Kind Of Wonderful.  What's the most romantic thing you've ever seen, done, or experienced?
You know you're asking this question to someone who hasn't been in that kind of relationship for a loooooong time don't you? Not sure I can remember that far back. Let's see. I can't even remember how the ex asked me to marry him. Is that awful? But I suppose we had our moments. I've got it

I wanted a baby - badly - he wasn't sure he was ready. I was on the pill. I always took them at night before bed. I opened the pill box (remember those little plastic cases with the pills inside?) and found a post-it note that said: "now it is time for having babies." I still have that little post it note inside of daughter's baby book.

Monday Quiz About Me

Welcome to Monday Quiz About Me - hosted by Acting Balanced and Touristic. They post 5 questions on Sunday evening along with a linky for you to link up your post answers!

Here are the Questions:
1.  If you could go to any festival or event in the world; which one would you choose? Mardi Gras just because I've always wanted to see it.

2. What is the first sign you see that tells you spring is near? Snow geese by the hundreds in the fields, resting on their way home.

3. When you were in school did you do your projects as soon as they were assigned or as close to the last minute as possible? Some of both I guess.

4. Would you rather have the power to be invisible or the power to read minds? If I were invisible I could just listen in so I wouldn't need to be able to read minds.

And don't forget to add a 5th Question on your own blog so we can answer as we hop around!

My question - Favorite day of the week and why?

Stress!

It's Thursday! One of my favorite days. Time to do a little "pondering" with Brenda from Ponderings of an Author.

Her rules are really easy:

1. Grab the Pondering with a Purpose Badge (in her sidebar)
2. Look at the week's prompt

4. Go back here and add the URL from your post to the linky list on Brenda's.
5. Go check out the other bloggers who have added their links to the list.
6. AND most of all.... Have fun!

This Week's prompt:  Words with double meanings -Stress

When I first read the prompt this morning, I thought maybe we weren't doing words with double meanings this week. When I think of the word stress I think of the daily life stresses that we just can't avoid:
Washing machine broke - crap now I have to go to the laundromat and then I have to come up with money for a new one;
car breaks down - stuck on the side of the road - how do I get home? How do I get to work tomorrow? How much money is this gonna cost?;
 test tomorrow and I haven't studied enough;
winter storm and roads are bad - did daughter make it home ok?;
Daughter pregnant, hope everything goes smoothly for her;

Those normal things that cause us so much stress - that was the first thought that came to my mind.

But when I think about it, there are other meanings of the word. It could mean the stress (or force) on the seams of my clothes caused by me gaining weight which is something that I'm stressed about - sorry, keeps going back to that meaning for me.

Hodgepodge

Welcome back to the Wednesday Hodgepodge! Be sure to add your link to the bottom of Joyce's post and then go visit the neighbors. After all, that's part of the fun!

1. When were you last 'on a mountaintop'?  You may answer in the literal or figurative sense. Last September when went home! I was on the top of Pine Mountain, Powell Mountain and Clinch Mountain and possibly a few others that I don't know the names of.

2.  Do you establish and maintain a strict budget in your household?  What is one piece of financial advice you would offer someone just starting out on their own? I try to but things always come up - like my washer kicking the bucket last Saturday. So now do I buy a new set instead of the garden shed I had planned on buying or get a used one to get me by till next year which is when I had planned on getting a new set?

3.  Cherries-yay or nay?  Cherry pie, cherry cola, black forest cake, or a scoop of Ben and Jerry's Cherries Garcia...pick one.Cherry pie is my favorite!

4.  Should you ever discuss religion or politics with people you don't know?I wouldn't advise getting into deep arguments over politics or religion but we all have our views and sometimes you just have to speak up.

5.  When you take a road trip do you prefer to be the driver or the passenger?  Where were you headed on your last road trip?I prefer to drive - like to be in control the wheel - other people scare me. The last road trip was the trip mentioned in #1.

6. If we peeked inside your closet, what color would we say is most prevalent? Black.

7. Who's your favorite senior citizen and why are they special? One of the ladies at the VFW is a real sweetheart.

 8.  Insert your own random thought here.Random thought - still working on socks - making pet stockings now. Pictures to follow.

Chats on the Farmhouse Porch

It's time to head over to Patrice's porch for the weekly chat. Welcome to the new participants in the chat!

Questions
  1. What's your favorite fruit? I like most fruits except for apples. They just don't do anything for me. Mangoes are one of my favorites.
  2. Wendell would like to know if you've ever been horseback riding. Oh yes, many times. Is he offering?
  3. Do you carry a small purse, a big one, or just a wallet? I'd have to say my purse is "medium" sized. I can't get everything into a small one but hate carrying a big one around so I choose somewhere in the middle. I've often just pulled my wallet out to go into a store.
  4. If you could travel to one state for a day (all expense paid), where would you go? If you're not in the US, where would you like to travel within your country? I've always wanted to see Colorado but right now I think I'd choose someplace warmer. I've never traveled west - maybe Arizona or New Mexico.
  5. What was your first car? A 1966 Opal Cadet that I bought from my brother for $60. It was a car that you literally had to "check the gas and fill the oil."

Coffee Chat

Time for the Coffee Chat! If you'd like to join, head over to Leslie's at Time out for Mom.

The topic is:
 "The Most Romantic Character... Ever?"

This one is easy. Without a doubt that would be - drum roll please - SAM ELLIOTT!
With that voice and that wonderful grin - not to mention one of the best chests I've ever seen on a man......OMG - anytime he wants to!
I grew up watching westerns and Sam Elliott makes one of the best cowboys I've ever seen - other than John Wayne of course. But Sam's also good in other types of movies too. Prancer comes to mind - didn't you just want to move into that little house and help him raise those kids? I did.

Monday Quiz About Me

Welcome to Monday Quiz About Me - hosted by Acting Balanced and Touristic. They post 5 questions on Sunday evening along with a linky for you to link up your post answers!

Here are the Questions:

1. Who was the last person you said 'I love you to?' My daughter.
2. What was the last non-kid friendly movie you saw? I don't do much TV and haven't been to a movie theatre in ages so I really don't remember.
3. When was the last time you got angry about something that you felt silly about later? These are hard today - I can't remember that one either.
4. Where is your favorite object at this moment? Object? My espresso machine.

And don't forget to add a 5th Question on your own blog so we can answer as we hop around!
My question - If given the choice which would you rather have - a housekeeper to do your cleaning for you or a big house you have to clean yourself? Yes, I have been working on some "deep cleaning" this weekend. I know it's not spring yet, but I'm ready. My answer - I'd love to have a big house and even though mine is small, I don't think I'd want a housekeeper - don't want anyone else seeing "my dirt." I'll do it myself.

2. All I hope for  my life is to do enough.

Live and let live!

Have fun!

This Week's prompt:  Words with double meanings -Live

I'd like to think that I could just live for the moment but I've never been able to do that. I've had too many roadblocks throughout my life. I need a plan - how am I going to live if.....plan a, plan b....

I don't require much to live. I need a job, one that enables me to pay the bills and have a little left over. I need a place to live, nothing elaborate. I need my kids. I need them to need me. That just about sums it up.

As far as the other meaning of "live," I guess we are all participating in a live "rehersal" of how we want to live our lives.

Hodgepodge

Welcome back to the Wednesday Hodgepodge! Be sure to add your link to the bottom of Joyce's post and then go visit the neighbors. After all, that's part of the fun!

 1.  This week marks the beginning of Lent...will you be giving something up or adding anything to your life during this season of the year? Baptist here - we don't do Lent.

2. The day before Lent is Shrove Tuesday... tradition states you eat pancakes on this day. In some parts of the world Shrove Tuesday is actually known as 'pancake day'. How do you like your pancakes? Or don't you? Two for two. I don't do pancakes either - bad memories of my mother's pancakes as a child. They were always burnt on the outside and raw in the middle.

3.  I'm sure there are many, but what's one love song you really love? The Rose.

4.  What are some things you do to let others know you love them? I do little things all the time. Picking up little things when I see them and think it's something they'd like, driving over to help daughter clean her house, making a special meal.....

5.  Roses...red, pink, or do you prefer another color? Can you recall the last time someone gave you flowers? Given your choice would you like to open the door and see a dozen red roses, a dozen purple tulips, or a dozen pink peonies? Yellow roses are my favorite but I would rather see them outside where they belong. I HATE getting flowers, why cut something so pretty just to have it die.

6.  President's Day will be celebrated in America next Monday. Does US Presidential history and trivia interest you?  Many Presidential homes are open to the public and offer guided tours...Monticello (Jefferson's home), Mount Vernon (Washington's home), Montpelier (James Madison's home), Hyde Park (FD Roosevelt's home) and The White House (home to the sitting President) to name just a few. Of those listed which would you be most interested in touring?  Why? I've seen Monticello. I've also seen Lincoln's home, both in Springfield and in New Salem. Past presidents do interest me but then all  vintage things interest me.

7.  Are you good at keeping secrets? I'll never tell.

8.  Insert your own random thought here.I had the day off today (Lincoln's birthday). I do not get Washington's birthday or President's Day- which if I remember right - started as a way of combining Washington's and Lincoln's birthdays so that schools only had to give one of them off. Somehow I think that's a little weird. But I did get a lot done today. Floors are all scrubbed, house is clean and I got two Christmas stockings crocheted! Some of you may know I'm making new ones for everyone next year. I actually have 13 done already and I only need 12 - but I have more patterns to go. Last week I found patterns for special "pet stockings." Yep, gonna make those too. I'll post pictures when I get them all done.

Chats on the Farmhouse Porch

It's time to head over to Patrice's porch for the weekly chat. Welcome to the new participants in the chat!

Questions
  1. Are you doing anything special for Valentine's Day? Not a thing.
  2. When you attend something that isn't totally casual, are you likely to wear dress pants or a dress? I prefer long skirts - usually paired with boots. I love the look of boots and I think that skirts set them off better than dresses.
  3. Do you use a regular toothbrush or one of the battery run kind? I use a regular one. I've tried the battery ones but I always go back to just a plain old toothbrush.
  4. Did you have valentines in school when you were a child? We did. We always made "mailboxes" for them. I can remember sorting through the valentines to make sure the right people got the right ones.
  5. If you could learn a new craft tomorrow, what would it be? I would love to be able to do the fancy quilts that so many people out there do. I think they're beautiful. Sadly, I don't think I have the patience, the time, or the money to do it. I imagine it could be an expensive hobby.

Coffee Chat

Time for the Coffee Chat! If you'd like to join, head over to Leslie's at Time out for Mom.

The topic is:
 "Early Bird or Night Owl?"
Do you think it's possible to switch?
Is it possible -  I suppose it is. I used to work third shift so early morning was not my favorite time of the day. It was the time I was getting really tired and wanting to go to sleep.  But then I switched to working days - and it took me a long time to get used to it. My body and my brain wanted to rest when I had to "get up and go." But eventually, both came around. Funny thing is, I still have no problem pulling an all nighter when the need arises. It seems that once my body learned to make the switch, it never forgot how and I can easily go back and forth. I can stay up all night long reading, crocheting, or writing a paper and while I may be tired, I'm not falling asleep at my desk. I just end up going to bed a little earlier than usual the next night and I'm up in the morning as if nothing changed.

I'm sitting here this morning in my own house -with coffee in hand. I actually stayed up last night, knowing that I could lounge around all day. But of course, I was up at 5 and ready to do something. Hopefully I'll get a lot done today!

Monday Quiz About Me

Welcome to Monday Quiz About Me - hosted by Acting Balanced and Touristic. They post 5 questions on Sunday evening along with a linky for you to link up your post answers!

Here are the Questions:
1. Do you tend to be more logically or emotionally driven in your decision-making? Definitely more logical. I've learned the hard way to not let emotions make decisions for me.

2. Do you take vitamin or other supplements?  Do you feel that they actually work? I actually just started to take vitamins - calcium that is. I think at my age the bones begin to shrink. Do they work - not sure but can't hurt.

3. Have you ever kissed someone and just knew they were not the right person or vise versa? Yes. I had a good friend and we actually tried to date. First kiss was just too weird - almost felt like I was trying to kiss my brother.

4. Why shouldn't the woman pay for a Valentine's Day date? I can't rationally think of any reason she shouldn't. But I don't think it's right the way men seem to want the women to take care of everything these days. It almost seems like the roles are reversing.

And don't forget to add a 5th Question on your own blog so we can answer as we hop around!

My 5th question this week is ...

Have you noticed that the days are getting longer?

Six Word Saturday

To participate all you need to do is describe your life (or something) in a phrase using just six words. For more information, go to Show My Face. and Cate will explain it. Add an image, a video, a song, nothing.

Just got back from the vet.
Had to get Kimmy's nails clipped.
They were starting to curl up.
Not as active as once was.
Also had a skin tag checked.
Vet said it was pretty normal.
For a dog of her age.
That was a relief to me.
I know she's getting quite old.
I know the day will come.
Don't want to think about that.

Have fun!

This Week's prompt:  Words with double meanings - Race

The first thing that comes to mind when I think of race is ethnicity and discrimination - which by the way - is so TOTALLY wrong. I have a hard time understanding why race is still an issue for some. Come on people, it's 2013. I would like to think that we could get past all that and just take people for what they are and what they believe in instead of how they look. We are a melting pot of people from everywhere. I myself have a heritage of Scot, Irish, and Cherokee and who knows what else. What race am I? I'm an American, that's what. Why does everything have to be about race? I hear that racism is more prominent in this country now than it has been in the recent past and I think - Is it racism or is it just politics? I do not like the current politics in this country but it has nothing to do with race. I don't care about your race. I do care about the country going down the tubes.

Sorry about the rant this morning - just had to.

Hodgepodge

Welcome back to the Wednesday Hodgepodge! Be sure to add your link to the bottom of Joyce's post and then go visit the neighbors. After all, that's part of the fun!

 1. Chinese New Year will be celebrated on February 10th, and 2013 is the year of the snake. When did you last see a snake?  Are you okay around snakes or do they give you the shivers? When I lived in the country I saw snakes all the time. I'm ok as long as I see them before I step on them - and having a hoe in my hand when I see them is a plus.
2. The color red in Chinese culture usually means good luck.  Do you believe in luck? Somewhat - I've been lucky in some things in my life but I don't believe in it enough to buy lottery tickets - unless the jackpot gets really big!
3. sledding-ice skating-building a snowman...if given a choice, which activity would you choose?  Which of the three have you done most recently?  Building a snowman - that's my kind of fun and the one I've done the most recently, but I do like ice skating and sledding too.
4.  Ralph Waldo Emerson is credited as saying, "The years teach much which the days never knew."  Where have you seen this quote played out in your own life?  I think this works in everyone lives. There is no teacher like experience.
5. When was the last time you ate a cupcake?  Probably at a carry-in at work.
6. What's something you can't say no to?  Coffee!
7.  Are you a doodler?  Only when REALLY bored!
8.  Insert your own random thought here.  I decided right after Christmas that I wanted to make new crocheted Christmas stockings for everyone in the family this year - each from a unique pattern. I started them in January and just finished #8 out of 12(that covers my kids and grandkids along with Biz's kids and grands).  So far the hardest part has been altering the patterns to make them all close to the same size. I have a total of 21 different patterns and am having trouble figuring out which ones to use. Somehow I think I'm going to make them all - there will hopefully more grands to come. I think I'll try to come up with some sort of "game" at Thanksgiving to have everyone choose their stocking. I'm also making Biz build me a "stocking post" to display them next year. Am I nuts to be working on Christmas in January and February?

Chats on the Farmhouse Porch

It's time to head over to Patrice's porch for the weekly chat. Welcome to the new participants in the chat!

Questions
  1. What is your favorite time of day to read? If you don't enjoy reading, then what is your favorite time to watch TV/movies? I like to read at night before I go to sleep.
  2. Did you watch the Super Bowl? If so, what was your favorite commercial? If you didn't watch it, what did you do Sunday night? No - not a sports fan. But I do like the Budweiser commercial.
  3. Have you been watching Downton Abbey?Who's your favorite character? If not, have you seen any interesting TV or movies series lately? Never heard of it?
  4. Do you enjoy home parties for selling items? (like Pampered Chef, Southern Living, Mary Kay) NO!
  5. Please finish this sentence. If I work very hard, I can make my life better.

Coffee Chat

Time for the Coffee Chat! If you'd like to join, head over to Leslie's at Time out for Mom.

The topic is: "What would be your Last Song?"
This is a hard one for me. To tell you the truth, the only thing I can think of is The William Tell Overture. I love it - I listen to it when I'm having a bad day or trying to do something that isn't working the way I want it to. I hear it and it makes me think of triumph - don't ask me why.

But as far as my LAST song - that would probably be one that goes back to my roots. Will the Circle be Unbroken (and that just came to me). Guess it's true that you can take the girl out of the country but you just can't take the country out of the girl.
