Pondering - Those pesky bills!

It's Thursday! One of my favorite days. Time to do a little "pondering" with Brenda from Ponderings of an Author.

Her rules are really easy:

1. Grab the Pondering with a Purpose Badge (in her sidebar)
2. Look at the week's prompt
3. Post something on your blog that relates to the prompt - it can be a story, a poem, a picture -- anything you want it to be.
4. Go back here and add the URL from your post to the linky list on Brenda's.
5. Go check out the other bloggers who have added their links to the list.
6. AND most of all.... Have fun!

This Week's prompt:  Bill

The first thing that came to mind this morning when I saw the topic was a name. Maybe that's because the "b" was capitalized. I've known quite a few Bills in my life!

The second thing that comes to mind is another I am very familiar with - those pesky bills I have to pay every week.

Then there's the "bill" on a ball cap.

And a program bill - an advertisement.

And the Bill of Rights.

And a bill to propose new legislation.

And paper money - those are called bills.

And then there's those bills on the face of some birds - I picture the "Aflac duck" with his broken bill!
Les asked for a picture so I went looking on google!

So there's lots of meanings of this week's word!

Hodgepodge

Welcome back to the Wednesday Hodgepodge! Be sure to add your link to the bottom of Joyce's post and then go visit the neighbors. After all, that's part of the fun!

1. What are your plans for Easter? Are you cooking a big lunch or dinner?  Dyeing eggs? Attending a sun rise service?  Eating too much chocolate? Cooking - yes, a ham for daughter; dyeing eggs - no but the VFW Easter Egg Hunt is Saturday morning - hoping the snow is gone by then; Sunrise service - I wish there was one here but there isn't; chocolate - no - swearing off (clothes getting a little too tight).

2.  What is something you feel too young to do? Too young? Going to have to go with AARP - I really need them to lose my name and quit sending me stuff.

3.  "Love is patient, love is kind.  It does not envy, it does not boast, it is not proud...it is not self-seeking, it is not easily angered, it keeps no record of wrongs..."

Of the characteristics mentioned in the biblical definition of love which do you find most difficult to live out and why? It always trusts - I have a really hard time trusting men and that comes from my experiences. I used to trust - no more.

4. What's a springtime flower you associate with your childhood? Going to go with daffodils - I love them and have always looked forward to seeing them pop up in the Spring, sometimes right through the snow.

5.  Ever sung karaoke? If so, what's your go-to song? If not and you're given the opportunity, would you? Never, and I never will!

6. What is something you keep in a basket? Crochet projects.

7.  When was the last time you felt foolish? Yesterday - giving presentation and the "smartboard" wouldn't work - maybe it was smarter than me? Could very well have been operator error.

8.  Insert your own random thought here.  I wish I could spend Easter with my two favorite guys.
Grandson #1 - isn't he a cutie

Grandson #2 - doesn't look like a preemie anymore!

Coffee Chat

Time for the Coffee Chat! If you'd like to join, head over to Leslie's at Time out for Mom.

The topic is: If you don't have anything nice to say......come sit by me.

Oh - let me get my coffee first before I start on this one. OK, I'm back. To begin with let me say that I HATE GOSSIPING PEOPLE! They make me really mad. Why? Probably because I have heard so much of it in my lifetime. My mother lives to talk about others. She will call me (and I live 700 miles away) to tell me what her neighbors are doing, or what someone in the church is doing, or what somebody's sisters cousins niece by her first marriage is doing! It doesn't matter that I don't know these people and I don't care what they are doing. She just HAS to gossip. I walk around with the phone at my ear for 15 to 20 minutes while she just rants away. And she is almost "fanatically" religious! To me, gossiping is not a very Christian thing to do.

Why, you ask, do I not just tell her that ? I've been telling her that for 53 years. It doesn't work.  It just makes her mad and she hangs up so she can call someone else to talk about me for the next 15 to 20 minutes!

Chats on the Farmhouse Porch

It's time to head over to Patrice's porch for the weekly chat. Welcome to the new participants in the chat! The questions today are from some of us "porch gatherers."
    Questions
    1. Melanie asks "What kinds of seafood have you tried and liked? What is the most unique seafood you've eaten? I like shrimp and lobster, some crab is ok - I did not like the calamari - that would be the most unique kind that I have eaten.
    2. Anne says, "An unforgettable holiday moment is That would be Spring break back in 1978 - there were five of us that went together and we had a blast. (She's on the other side of that BIG pond. I believe a holiday is a vacation on this side. )
    3. Arlene wants to know, "When was the last time you tried something new?" Not sure - I guess I'm trying something new right now with this new job.
    4. Becky asks, "Who or what inspires you?" My children inspire me.
    5. Madonna wants to know," How did you chose the names of your children. Wendell adds,"If you don't have kids, how do you choose pet names?" Daughter's name came from a book I read as a teenager. I had never heard the name before and I loved it. Son was named after his father.

      Pondering With a Purpose

It's Thursday! One of my favorite days. Time to do a little "pondering" with Brenda from Ponderings of an Author.

      Her rules are really easy:

      1. Grab the Pondering with a Purpose Badge (in her sidebar)
      2. Look at the week's prompt

      5. Go check out the other bloggers who have added their links to the list.
      6. AND most of all.... Have fun!

      This Week's prompt:  Watch

The first thing I think of when I think of watch is a wristwatch and how they have become almost a thing of the past. How many people do you know that still wear a watch? In this electronic age, it seems that most rely on their gadgets to tell them the time. I used to love wearing a watch - I sort of miss it.

The other thing that came to mind was  "people watching" - one of my favorite things to do. And when was the last time you watched the sun rise, or the sun set? I also love to watch the mist rise over the mountains down home in VA. Lately, I think I'd love to sit and watch anything - it's been rather hectic here.

      Hodgepodge

Welcome back to the Wednesday Hodgepodge! Be sure to add your link to the bottom of Joyce's post and then go visit the neighbors. After all, that's part of the fun!

      1. March 20th is the first day of spring...is she a lion or a lamb in your part of the world? It's definitely a lion today and we have a "significant" winter storm advisory for this weekend!

      2. What's the most dreaded task on your spring clean to-do list?  Do you have a 'plan of attack'? The garage - no real plan - I'll just have to take everything out to the driveway and then try to organize it.

      3. Peas...love 'em or hate 'em?  What's a favorite dish you make using peas? Love peas in everything but mostly just plain with a little butter.

      4.  Do you feel under appreciated? Sometimes - like when I try to give advice to daughter on her new baby and she blows me off and then I get a text last night saying that her friend told her the same thing so now she's going to try it!

      5. Have you been using Google Reader?  If so, what are you switching to now that GR has announced retirement?  If not, how do you read your favorite blogs? I've never used it.

      6. Anne Bradstreet is credited with the following quote~

"If we had no winter, the spring would not be so pleasant;  if we did not sometimes taste of adversity, prosperity would not be so welcome."

Agree or Disagree?  Why? Agree - it's those times at the bottom that let us know how good the other times are.

      7.  When did you last 'spring for something'?  What was it? Yesterday - I ordered myself a tablet - just because I wanted one.

      8.  Insert your own random thought here Isn't he a cutie? That is a newborn size - he's getting a little big for the preemies but he sure looks like he's swimming in that one.

      Coffee Chat

Time for the Coffee Chat! If you'd like to join, head over to Leslie's at Time out for Mom.

The topic is: Let's Play I Spy.   I Spy with my little eye....something that is GREEN.

Oh I wish I'd have taken a picture on Sunday! I painted my fingernails green for St. Patrick's Day. A bright, cheery, Springtime green. But I wasn't brave enough to leave it on for the work week.

The grass in my back yard is green and almost looks like it could be mowed. Not sure I'm quite ready for that but I an definitely ready for my garden - planting and looking for those little green plants to spring up out of the ground. And I noticed yesterday when I left the building that there were actually a few flowers blooming out in the entry flowerbed! I think it's finally going to be spring - although the weather this week seems awfully cold to me.

      4. When was the last time you said something nice to someone?  I try to be nice to people every day.

And don't forget to add a 5th Question on your own blog so we can answer as we hop around! My 5th question toady:
When faced with a new job, are you more nervous or excited?

      Pondering With A Purpose

It's Thursday! One of my favorite days. Time to do a little "pondering" with Brenda from Ponderings of an Author.

      6. AND most of all.... Have fun!

      This Week's prompt:  Green

I love the color green -it is my favorite. And it's almost St. Patrick's Day! But the question today is have we ever seen someone we love turn green (from sickness). My answer is yes. When the kids were in high school, I worked a second job at a convenience store on the weekends. One day, a young boy came in to buy something. He was GREEN - literally, green. He was all smiles and didn't look sick or anything. I thought he was going to a party or something - but it wasn't close to Halloween. I almost asked him what he was up to but thank God something stopped me. When I got home, I mentioned it to my daughter and she said "Yes, that's ____, his liver is failing." I felt awful! The child was dying and I thought he was playing some sort of prank. He lived for another six months and I got to know him a little through those months. He always had a smile on his face. It never ceases to amaze me how terminally ill kids can find anything to smile about.

      Hodgepodge

Welcome back to the Wednesday Hodgepodge! Be sure to add your link to the bottom of Joyce's post and then go visit the neighbors. After all, that's part of the fun!

      1. Do you play games of luck/chance for money? Have you ever played bingo for money? Visited a casino?  Placed a bet on a horse? Bought a lottery ticket? I have: neverplayed bingo; been to a casino once; never bet on a horse; and I buy lottery tickets only when the jackpot gets really high.

      2.  Will you be preparing and/or dining on the traditional Corned Beef and Cabbage meal this St. Patrick's Day? Mashed-baked-hash browned-french fried...your favorite way to have potatoes? Yes, I will be making the corned beef and cabbage but I will not be eating it (can't stand cooked cabbage). My favorie potatoes would probably be mashed.

      3. What's the last thing you felt 'green with envy' over? I can't remember anything. I have a coworker who is vacationing in FL right now and I told her that I was jealous  - does that count?

      4.  What's at the end of your rainbow? I had this question yesterday and answered with "soggy ground." I think I'll stick with that.

      5. March 12th marks the anniversary of the death of Anne Frank (June 12, 1929-March, 1945).  Anne's diary detailing her time spent hiding from the Nazi's during the war ranks as one of the best selling books of all time.  Besides your blog, do you keep any sort of diary or journal?  Was this a habit you developed as a child or is journaling something new for you? My blog is my only journal. I used tokeep a journal when I was in my early 20s and I still have it - kind of interesting to read every now and then - usually makes me laugh.

      6. What's an item in your home or closet that contains every color of the rainbow? I know there's nothing in my closet. I honestly can't think of anything around the house either but I do have my carpenter's box decorated for St. Patrick's Day right now and it has a rainbow in it. It sits on the porch and gets decorated for every holiday.

      7.  Write a limerick with you as the subject.  You can do it!!  Just remember this is a family friendly blog...don't make me get out my wooden spoon.
There once was a girl named Tam
that ended up with a guy named Sam
      Good companions they are
though not a couple by far
but it keeps them both from being on the lam.

      8.  Insert your own random thought here.
      It's hump day!

      Chats on the Farmhouse Porch

It's time to head over to Patrice's porch for the weekly chat. Welcome to the new participants in the chat!

      Questions
      1. Beth asks:What's your favorite movie of all times? The one you've seen multiple times. That would be It's A Wonderful Life -the best movie ever made!
      2. Clairity says: Name three things that are permanent residents in your handbag or purse. Aside from the normal things like your wallet and keys? How about: a flash drive, hair ties, and disposable toothbrushes.
      3. Red asks: What's the best way to your heart? Kindness
      4. Mamaw wants to know: Do you like going to yard sales? Love going to them - hate having them.
      5. Cathy says: If you could slide down a rainbow, what do you think you'd find on the other side? Soggy ground?

      Coffee Chat

Time for the Coffee Chat! If you'd like to join, head over to Leslie's at Time out for Mom.

The topic is: "Keep it, toss it, burn it, sell it  "
In the same vein as last Chat's game, except this time Les is giving us the items:
      1.  old high school/alma mater tshirt - definitely keep - I can't tell you how many old tshirts I have in boxes in the attic - some of mine and lots of the kid's. I once took some of my son's old tshirts and made a quilt out of them for him.
      2.  love letter from old flame who broke your heart - burn it - you don't need those memories, unless there is a way you could use it to get revenge, then by all means keep it.
      3.  engagement ring -- from when you said "no" Personally, I would have given it back - but if I had it, I would sell it.
      4.  vinyl edition of what was "your song" - you can dowload from iTunes anyway This one would depend on how old the vinyl was - some can be valuable, so I'd keep or sell.

      Monday Quiz About Me

Welcome to Monday Quiz About Me - hosted by Acting Balanced and Touristic. They post 5 questions on Sunday evening along with a linky for you to link up your post answers!

      Here are the Questions:
      1. When would you consider planting flowers or vegetables at your residence? Every spring! Can't wait - garden is already all planned out - it will e plowed in early April and planted over the next few weeks. 2. What is more egregious; cheating on one's spouse or spending the family into being bankruptcy? I'd say that both are pretty bad, although cheating is the one unforgivable thing in my book. 3. In honor of Pi Day this week, what is your favorite kind of pie? Cherry is my fave! 4. Would would you give Wayne @ Touristic for his birthday today? I have no idea! Since he seems to be the intellectual type - maybe a book on a subject he is interested in?

And don't forget to add a 5th Question on your own blog so we can answer as we hop around! It's been a short weekend again with running back and forth to the hospital to see my grandson. I hope they let him come home soon. I have been extremely tired and I think it's from sitting around in a hospital room - and maybe driving a lot more than usual. Daughter doesn't seem to mind that much. She has her ipad and phone to keep her company. I have noticed this weekend that her phone never seems to stop "beeping" with text messages! This younger generation! I personally HATE texting and do it sparingly. So my question today is: What is wrong with having an actual conversation?

      Pondering With A Purpose

It's Thursday! One of my favorite days. Time to do a little "pondering" with Brenda from Ponderings of an Author.  I'm so glad that Brenda got her new site up and running in time for Ponderings!

Have fun!

      This Week's prompt:  Flexible

Talk about flexible - Brenda is the epitome of the word. For someone to get home from Germany, almost instantly have to travel for the birth of a grandchild and then return to have to set up a new blog - yes, that's being flexible.

I'd like to think that I am a pretty flexible person. I've had to be. I've had an interesting week- which involved a lot of flexibility - myself with the birth of my second grandchild. I had not planned on going to the hospital last night but daughter sounded so "blue" on the phone I had to put my coat and shoes back on and head out in the snow to make the hour trip. She was bored. No-one was there with her. (She is staying at the hospital until GPR is strong enough to come home). By the time I got there though, her hubby had arrived and she was all smiles again. Oh well. I got to see my little GPR (which is what I've decided to call the little guy since they didn't consult me on the name and I really don't care that much for it). All is good. I'm flexible that way!

      Hodgepodge

Welcome back to the Wednesday Hodgepodge! Be sure to add your link to the bottom of Joyce's post and then go visit the neighbors. After all, that's part of the fun!

      1. My real life friends came through with another question this week so thank you real life friends. When you've eaten in a restaurant do you complete their comment card? Do you take online surveys highlighted at the bottom of store receipts? I have but rarely.

      2. The (US) ban on women in combat was lifted at the end of January. It will probably be next year before specifics are worked out, but its been reported over 200,000 front line positions will eventually open up to women.  Your thoughts? Totally against it. Why? I just don't think it's right. But then I think we messed up years ago with all the women's lib stuff. I would have loved to be able to stay at home and take care of my kids instead of going to work every day.

      3.  In looking back at all the blog posts you've written, what's your favorite post title? I'm not much into the witty titles - don't really have a favorite.

      4. What's worse-overly permissive parents or overly protective parents?  Did your own parents lean more to the permissive or the protective category?  If you're a parent where do you fall? I tried to fall somewhere in the middle. I was raised by the fanatically overbearing - not sure I'd call it overly protective, just overbearing. I would never do that to my kids.

      5.  Candlelight-moonlight-firelight-bright lights in the big city...which one's your favorite?  I'm going to go with firelight, although I do like candlelight and moonlight too. I've never been a city gal, although I do believe that the lights of Cincinnati are a beautiful sight.

      6. Dr. Seuss's birthday was celebrated on Saturday. What's a favorite book you remember (Seuss or otherwise) from your own childhood?  Did books play an important role in your growing up years? Explain.I missed this question somehow! But yes, books played a big part of my growing up. Books were a way to escape and you could always find me with one.

      7.  To quote Dr. Seuss...

"From there to here, and here to there, funny things are everywhere."
from One Fish Two Fish Red Fish Blue Fish

Share something funny you've recently read, seen or heard.  I just was reading a "ghost story" this morning. there was a passage when a character went running out of the house with his hair "standing on end." For some reason a picture of Albert Einstein came into my head as I was reading that and it made me smile.
      8.  Insert your own random thought here.Grandson #2 is doing a little better. He has gained a little weight back (he went down to 4 lb, 1 oz) and is trying to nurse a little more. He still has to be under the light for his jaundice but all is well. Daughter got her staples out yesterday so she is also feeling better.

      Coffee Chat

Time for the Coffee Chat! If you'd like to join, head over to Leslie's at Time out for Mom.

The topic is: "Snog, Marry, or Throw off A Cliff?"

Once again Les, I'm gonna have to pass this one up - don't watch enough movies I guess. But the topic for next week! That I can get into. See you then.

      Chats on the Farmhouse Porch

It's time to head over to Patrice's porch for the weekly chat. Welcome to the new participants in the chat!

      Questions
      1. Who has the most outgoing personality in your family? I would say my son. He is a very social person. He used to be surrounded by friends at all times - so much that it drove me nuts at times. I think he has mellowed somewhat now that he has his own family but he's still very outgoing.
      2. How did you name your blog? Well - because my kids grew up and left me all alone :(.
      3. What's your favorite topping for ice cream? Melted peanut butter!
      4. Tell me about someone you know who would make a wonderful character for a book. Oops- please. That's a little difficult. I think maybe a coworker - because she's just a little bitty woman and she's always "bopping" around. It makes me smile to watch her sometimes.
      5. Please tell me up to three questions that you think I should ask on future farmhouse chats. Well: best childhood memory, one word that "defines" you, collector of something?

      Monday Quiz About Me

Welcome to Monday Quiz About Me - hosted by Acting Balanced and Touristic. They post 5 questions on Sunday evening along with a linky for you to link up your post answers!

      Here are the Questions:

      1. Which are you better at: Reading, Writing or Math?If I had to choose one I guess it would be writing, although I've never had a problem with any of them.
      2. Tell us a good 'come back' story. Where you were down but were able to reverse fortunes and come out on top. I've been down a lot in my life. I was a newly divorced single mother when I lost my first job to "downsizing." For two years, I worked 5 part time jobs while I went to school. Don't know that I came out "on top" in the end, but things got much better.
      3. Which would you rather do: dine or eat? Definitely eat.
      4. What is one thing the someone close to you does that just annoys the heck out of you? That would be the Biz and he tends to be somewhat of a slob in certain areas of the house. I don't understand how you can add salt to a pot on the stove and the entire stovetop looks like there has been a snowstorm - or why food ALWAYS ends up on the floor, table, cabinet - or why he can get something out but never put it away - and I'm not even going to mention the bathroom issues!

And don't forget to add a 5th Question on your own blog so we can answer as we hop around!
Most of you probably know by now that I got a new grandson last week - a surprise 6 week early grandson. It's amazing how small 4 and a half pounds looks and feels! He's doing great but it scared me and everyone else half to death. I think I managed to stay pretty calm on the outside but I was sure shaking on the inside. How do you handle crisis situations - calm or crazy?
