Follow Friday Four Fill-In Fun

Welcome to the weekly Follow Friday Four Fill-in Fun Blog Hop!

Photobucket

Each week, Hilary over at Feeling Beachie lists four statements with a blank for you to fill in on your own blogs. This week’s co-host is me - I came up with the last statement.

Hilary really needs co-hosts, so please email me some statements! She would LOVE it if you could please help her spread the word about this hop…. So, please tweet, FaceBook share, and add the linky to your post…
This week’s statements:
1. without fail, whenever I fly it's work related.
2. I used to be a lot braver about driving in cities.
3. When I crochet I get lost in the project and don't pay attention to anything else.
4. My greatest fear is losing touch with my kids.

Pondering With a Purpose

Thursday again! Time to do a little "pondering" with Brenda from Ponderings of an Author.

Her rules are really easy:

1. Grab the Pondering with a Purpose Badge (in her sidebar)
2. Look at the week's prompt
3. Post something on your blog that relates to the prompt - it can be a story, a poem, a picture -- anything you want it to be.
4. Go back here and add the URL from your post to the linky list on Brenda's.
5. Go check out the other bloggers who have added their links to the list.
6. AND most of all.... Have fun!

This Week's prompt:               Resolutions

I don't make resolutions. Why set myself up for failure? There's lots of things I could resolve to do but I've learned that it works much better for me to just plan a way to do something instead of resolving to do it. Plans can change, therefore if something happens to change my plans - I'll just come up with a new plan and not have to count myself a failure! What are some of the things I plan to do in the new year? Lets see.......

I definitely NEED to lose some weight.
I need to get to England and this is second only because the "plan" may put this in January of 2014.
I need to get my kitchen finished.
I want to get my teeth professionally whitened - too many years of being addicted to coffee I think.
I want to get my floors refinished.
I want to get the front porch redone.

I'm sure there are lots more but that's all I can think of right now.

Chirstmas at My House

Since there isn't a hodgepodge this week, I thought I'd give you a wrap up of my Christmas with pictures.
Let's start with the tree..the one I wasn't going to put up.... yes I caved.

Then there was the get together with Biz's family - love the way the girls had to make faces.
This is his daughter who just got home from Afghanistan.
And then there was Christmas with my daughter and her hubs - and my next grandson!

She's easy to please - and easy to send into giggling fits.

I got Biz a remote control helicopter - knowing that he would have hours of fun tormenting the cats with it.
 Which he did.
I caught this last night - I think it was a battle for who got to lay on the fuzzy blanket.
And there was this little guy - growing up so fast!
He's definitely going to be a "ladies man"-just look at that grin.
Daddy had to help a little.
Didn't want anything to do with Santa.
But it was ok if Mom and Dad were there!

Have fun!

This Week's prompt:                Overcoming Loss
Loss of Innocence-Loss of Dignity- Loss of Privacy-Loss of a loved one-Loss of purpose
I, like Brenda, have to admit that I have lost all of those things at one point or another. I could even add a few to the list - the one that comes to mind would be loss of self. Loss is never an easy thing to deal with but when you lose yourself - what do you do?

You all know that I call this blog "Empty nest in IL" and if you have read much you know that my world has revolved around my kids for a long time. It was always me and them - together. When my son joined the Air Force I was devastated - but I had to let him go. Daughter stayed with me till she was 24. I always told her that she could never leave me but of course SIL came along and off she went. So there I was. ALONE.

I did not deal with it very well. The house was too quiet, too clean, there's really no point in cooking for one, laundry was always done, no dishes.......So what was I supposed to do? I wallowed for a while and became somewhat of a "hermit." I really hate to admit it but I even spent many nights with a bottle of wine. Until I took the trash out one day and realized how many bottles were there. I couldn't let myself go down that road so I had to do something.

I started crocheting a lot. I  and even did some craft fairs. I joined the VFW. I joined Blue Star Mothers of America. I started this blog. I put one foot in front of the other and kept going. That's all you can do. Nothing stays the same but wallowing doesn't help anything.

Now, I do still enjoy an occasional glass of wine and my kids are still the most important thing in my life. And I've learned that even though they're gone - they still need me. I have a life of my own now. Me - myself - my life - and things are better.  I've grown a lot and this blog has been a big part of that growth. I thank you all for that.

Hodgepodge

Welcome back to the Wednesday Hodgepodge! Be sure to add your link to the bottom of Joyce's post and then go visit the neighbors. After all, that's part of the fun!

This week's questions:

1. How will you spend 'the night before Christmas'? There is a Christmas Eve service at the church that I plan on intending.

2.  What is one thing you are not? I am not pretentious.

3.  Fudge-are you a fan?  Your favorite flavor? Yes please, any flavor  will do but especially peanut butter. I'll be making some this weekend.

4. Did you attend any craft/vendor fairs in the month of December?  Do you prefer homemade goodies or the more professional stalls? Are you giving any homemade gifts this year? I give home crocheted gifts every year. Homemade gifts mean more to me because they require you to actually work at making something special for someone special.

5. What's your favorite type of holiday gathering? Family and friends, small get togethers are the best.

6.  We're approaching a new year...what's going to be different in 2013? Hopefully a new job description.

7. Share a favorite scripture, quote, saying, or song lyric relating to peace. "Peace on earth, good will toward men."

8.  Insert your own random thought here.I hope everybody has a wonderful Christmas with their families. I also hope that everyone, in some way, remembers the reason for the season.

Monday Quiz About Me

3. Do you have New Year's Eve plans? To stay at home and probably not even stay up to see the new year in.
4. What was the best blog post you read this week? I enjoy reading the posts on Brenda's Thursday "Pondering" hop. She has some great topics that will actually make you think before you write your post. Last week I really enjoyed Stacy's post on memories.
And don't forget to add a 5th Question on your own blog so we can answer as we hop around!
My 5th question: Regarding the tragedy in Connecticut this past week. What are your feelings on gun control? Mine? Owning a firearm is one of our basic rights. If guns were illegal, only the criminals would own them. I hate the thought of having armed guards at our schools but if there had been one in this case could this have been prevented?

I think that I am lucky to have actually lived the old way. I remember the coal stove in my granny's living room. I remember the outhouse. I remember making apple butter in a huge kettle outside over a fire. I remember the old wringer washing mashing. I remember the crank telephone that hung on granny's wall. I remember our first black and white TV. I remember two local channels. I remember cars with crank up windows and sitting in front of a fan, trying to cool off. Then there are the newer things - landlines, record players, the first Nintendo - better yet the Atari! Cable TV, air conditioning.........the list goes on.
I remember getting my first computer and then getting the internet at home. Thought we hit the big time then didn't we? Our cars now have built in navigation and heated seats.
Wow, the things that I have seen in my lifetime!

But are there personal memories? Of course there are although I'm not sure they would make for very exciting reading material.

Pondering With a Purpose

Thursday again! Time to do a little "pondering" with Brenda from Ponderings of an Author.

5. Go check out the other bloggers who have added their links to the list.
6. AND most of all.... Have fun!

This Week's prompt:                Loss

Tragedy, loss - I have to say that I have experienced a lot of it. I lost my paternal grandmother when I was 7, my grandfather  when I was 12 and numerous aunts and uncles along the way. Let's just say that I was quite familiar with funerals when I was a child. But close, personal tragedy did not hit until I was 13.

My sisters and I were in a bad car accident. My oldest sister was killed. Both me and my other sister were badly injured. We were in the hospital from September 3rd till October 6th and then had hospital beds set up at home. I was in a "body cast." I jokingly say that I am bionic because I have lots of metal and plastic holding me together - and lots of scars, mostly on my arms and legs. My sister also had multiple scars. I quickly adopted the attitude "If you don't like the way I look, don't look." She, on the other hand had a hard time dealing with it. I believe that she thought she had to be the "life of the party" to compensate for her scars. It was a downward spiral for her and she ended up taking her own life.

So you can see, I know tragedy. I believe that may be why I "cling" so much to my children. Maybe cling is not the right word. They mean the world to me and I try not to take anything for granted because I know that life can change in an instant.

Hodgepodge

Welcome back to the Wednesday Hodgepodge! Be sure to add your link to the bottom of Joyce's post and then go visit the neighbors. After all, that's part of the fun!

This week's questions:

1.  Share your traditions surrounding the Christmas stocking. The year my daughter was born I found a pattern for a Christmas stocking that I really liked and made them for what at the time was three of us. Since that year, I have probably made close to a thousand of those stockings. One year my bf approached me the week before Christmas and asked if I could possibly get 19 of them done before she had a special Christmas party. Her whole family was going to be home for the first time in years. That week flew by with every spare minute spent crocheting. I even enlisted my daughter to help me but we got them all done. I've altered the pattern to where I can make them from about 6 inches to a huge one I made for my nephew - it was 36 inches long! They normally are about 18 inches. I'm going to put mine up tomorrow night and will try to take a picture!
picture as promised

2.  How many hours of sleep do you average at night?  Is it enough? Usually about 6 and it seems to be enough for me.

3.  If you had to give up one thing for the remainder of this year what would it be?  Um...... definitely NOT coffee - I may be able to do without my flavored creamers for that long - but I wouldn't like it.

4.  The Duke and Duchess of Cambridge (or Wills and Kate as I like to call them) have announced they're expecting a baby. Do you follow news of the Royals? Nope!

5.  For me,  the sound of childhood is giggles.

6.  Fruit cake-yay or boo? What's your favorite dessert made with fruit? I have to say nay. I've had a few that weren't too bad but most are just horrible.

7. What is one thing you want to accomplish before 2012 comes to an end? A baby blanket for my grandson who's due in April.

8.  Insert your own random thought here. My last final is next Monday. I graduate - again - on the 15th. Then on to my Master's. I will be taking a semester off so I'll be available to help daughter with the new baby if she needs me. I cannot wait for next May! Son, dil and my G1 will be coming home on leave! I'll have TWO grandsons here at the same time. After discussing with son and dil, I have put off the England trip until next fall or the following January. That way daughter and G2 will be able to go too! I really don't want to travel by myself. It will be the first time I go overseas.

Chats on the Farmhouse Porch

It's time to head over to Patrice's porch for the weekly chat.

Questions

  1. Do you have your tree up yet? If not, when will you put it up? If you don't have a tree, please tell me about another tradition you like. I put the tree up last Sunday - a little late for me but it turned out really pretty.
  2. What was the best job you ever had? The worst? The worst job I ever had was waitressing - hated it. The best would have been my previous job - there were some pretty awesome people there.
  3. Do you drive around and look at Christmas lights? If not applicable, tell me something you like to look at when you go for a drive. Yes.
  4. Does your tea kettle have a whistle? I don't have a tea kettle at the moment.
  5. Do you like boots? Yes, I wear them all the time (have them on right now). Hoping to get another pair for Christmas.

Coffee Chat

Time for the Coffee Chat! If you'd like to join, head over to Leslie's at Time out for Mom.

The topic is: Christmas Traditions

I have a few Christmas traditions starting with putting the tree up on the day after Thanksgiving. It is the start of the Christmas season for me. It didn't get done this year and I was extremely upset - kind of ruined it for me and I said that I would not put up a tree at all because of it. BUT - I caved. I got a tree last weekend and put it up.

The only other tradition that I can think of is Christmas Eve pajamas. It started when the kids were little. I would always buy them Christmas themed pajamas to wear on Christmas Eve. I still do it. This year I ordered matching flannel pj bottoms and Christmas t-shirts for me and Biz. They should be here this week!
