Chats on the Farmhouse Porch

It's time to head over to Patrice's porch for the weekly chat.Wendell is with us today! Don't know about anybody else but I've kind of missed him.
Questions

  1. Please tell me a fond autumn memory. Or tell me something interesting you're doing now that fall is here. Fond memories? I have lots of them. I love Halloween and seeing all the kids dressed up. I used to make my kid's outfits. I made them "jailbird" costumes one year and made them so they could later be used for pajamas. The first time I put them on my son after Halloween (he was pretty little), he went tearing out of the bathroom saying "I ready to go, I ready to go!"
  2. What's your favorite kind of cheese? Colby Longhorn
  3. Have you ever been in a wedding, other than your own (if applicable)? I was in quite a few weddings in my younger years.
  4. Did you ever do anything as a child to earn money? (Lemon aid stand, crafts, mother's helper, chores, etc.) We used to go around picking up pop bottles and taking them in for the deposit.
  5. Do you wear a watch? Not anymore - I think the cell phones have taken the place of watches. I miss wearing one but it just seems unnecessary anymore.
I will probably miss the chat next week as I'll be down home. I'll miss everybody and will bring back lots of pictures!

Coffee Chat

Time for the Coffee Chat! If you'd like to join, head over to Leslie's at Time out for Mom.

  The topic is:
Back To School joys and trials

Well, being that my children are done with school and I am still GOING to school, I may have a little different perspective. My classes started a month ago and I took my first test yesterday. I think I did well. I must say that I am actually enjoying this semester - the classes are actually going to TEACH me something, which has been lacking in quite a few of the "required" classes that I have taken recently. My favorite is "Computer Forensics" and I LOVE IT! This class is going to actually require some work, and lots of studying. But, as I said, I think I will actually walk away from it with some new knowledge. That's the whole point of school, isn't it?

This weeks Questions:
1. What room in the house do you try your hardest to keep clean? I'd have to say the kitchen. I can't stand dirty dishes or counters.
2. How do you describe your blog to someone you just met? I don't usually tell many people about my blog.

3. What was your lie from last week?  (If you didn't play last week, What was your favorite cartoon you watched as a kid?) I don't really enjoy my job but hopefully that will change when I take on my new responsibilities.

Pondering With a Purpose

Thursday again! Time to do a little "pondering" with Brenda from Fiction With a Purpose.

1. Grab the Pondering with a Purpose Badge (in her sidebar)
2. Look at the week's prompt

6. AND most of all.... Have fun!

This Week's prompt:   Venting

Oh to be able to vent! I used to live out in the country just 5 miles from my bf. She's been there through the past 30+ years - the good times and the bad times. She's the person who'll tell me what I want to hear or tell me like it is - depending on the situation and what I need at the time. She was my venting outlet for a long time and I was hers. Living so close, it wasn't unusual for one of us to show up and rant for an hour or two about all those things that drive a person crazy - kids, exes, MEN, jobs...... All she had to do was look at me and she'd smile, turn around and put a pot of coffee on and the venting was on!
I miss it, and phone venting is just not the same.

Hodgepodge

Welcome back to the Wednesday Hodgepodge! Be sure to add your link to the bottom of Joyce's post and then go visit the neighbors. After all, that's part of the fun!

1. What's the best and worst thing thing about growing older? The best thing is becoming a grandmother! The worst would be looking in the mirror and not recognizing yourself. Truth is, I know I'm 53 but I still feel like I should be 30!

2.   Autumn arrives this week in the Northern Hemisphere...what one thing do you love most about the fall season? I love the colors and the cooler temps. It's nice to not need the heat or the air!

3.  Speaking of fall...pumpkin seems to be flavoring everything these days-are you a fan?   What's your favorite pumpkin flavored food or beverage? Pumpkin bread would be my favorite.

4.  Since we're on the subject of fall...what's the worst fall you've ever taken? I've never had a bad fall. I fell off of a stepladder when I was pregnant with my daughter and it scared me half to death but didn't hurt anything.

5.  If you could own a prop from any film what would you choose? How about the plantation house from Gone With the Wind!

6. What's the most interesting word you've read or learned in the past week? I can't think of a word that I have learned recently.

7. When was the last time you locked yourself out of your house, car, or office?  Was it a big deal? I used to lock myself out of the house when I lived in the country but it was no big deal - I knew how to break in. Biz locked himself out of his truck and I broke into it for him. Must be a knack I have. Is that bad?
8.  Insert your own random thought here. For anyone who doesn't know - I'M GOING TO BE A GRANDMA AGAIN!!!!!! Daughter gave me the news last Friday. I'm so excited for her. She's been trying to get pregnant forever. In fact, she was extremely upset when her brother told us they were expecting. It was a really hard time. I was so happy for them but so sorry for her.

Chats on the Farmhouse Porch

It's time to head over to Patrice's porch for the weekly chat.Wendell is with us today! Don't know about anybody else but I've kind of missed him.
Questions

  1. Do you prefer to wash dishes by machine or by hand? If you tell me you don't wash dishes, I will cry, but secretly want to be like you when I grow up! I remember my dad mentioning a dishwasher once and my mother's comment of "Why? I already have three (as in me and my sisters). I still do dishes by hand and I don't mind it. I did not, however, EVER make my kids do dishes. They had chores to do but never dishes.
  2. Who has been the biggest inspiration to you? I guess I would have to say my grandmother. She was an awesome woman - Cherokee and did everything the old way.
  3. Have you been to any fall festivals or local fairs? Will you be going to any? I've only been to one so far but will probably go to a few.
  4. Bath or shower? Usually shower but sometimes there's nothing like soaking in a bath.
  5. Tell me something interesting you learned from a blog recently. Please:) I learn a lot by reading others' posts. Just today I learned that three of my favorite bloggers are actually related. I knew that "Touristic" and "Acting Balanced" were married but didn't realize that "Retired not Tired" was Heather's mom!

Coffee Chat

The coffee chat is back! If you'd like to join, head over to Leslie's at Time out for Mom.

  The topic is:
Men.....and the Women Who Blog About Them

Specifically, how you manage having a home, kids - as a SAHM or a mom working outside the home, family, friends, time to write your blog, time to read blogs.....and still had time for the man/significant other in your life.

OK, I'm not sure if I qualify for this post or not. My kids are grown and gone so I have much more time than you moms out there that still have to juggle not only your life, but also the lives of your kids. I do still work full time and go to school full time so it doesn't really seem like I have much more time on my hands than I ever did but at least I don't have the stress of being responsible for kids. Wait - I still feel responsible for my kids but now it is more a feeling of being proud of the people they have become instead of worrying about shaping them into responsible adults.

As far as having time for a man in my life - I guess I do have the Biz but our relationship is more what I would call "companions" or friends than a romantic relationship. I believe those days are over for me.

Monday Quiz About Me

Based on the original Meet Me on Monday hosted by Java at Never Growing Old, Heather over at Acting Balanced  posts 5 questions on Sunday evening along with a linky for you to link up your post answers! Since Java is back , Heather has changed the name of her hop to "Monday Quiz About Me."

This weeks Questions:

1. Has reading a book ever changed your life? Which one and why, if yes? Hard one. I suppose that it has but what book? There is, of course, the Bible, then Johnny Got His Gun, and many, many more that I could list ending with Brenda's last book Skewered Halo. Books that provoke thought - cause you to think about the world and how you fit into it, what you can do to help others - I believe those change your life.

2. What was your favorite game to play as a child? Believe it or not, I'd have to go with Monopoly.

3. What person in history would you most like to meet? So many! Really it's just too hard to choose.

4. Tell us two truths and a lie about yourself... I love to cook, I enjoy my job, and I think the educational system in this country is going downhill.

And don't forget to add a 5th Question on your own blog so we can answer as we hop around!

I just found out I'm going to be a grandma again! It made my weekend. I also got to Skype with my don, dil, and grandson yesterday and watch the little guy crawling! What was the highlight of your weekend?

Pondering With a Purpose

Thursday again! Time to do a little "pondering" with Brenda from Fiction With a Purpose.

Her rules are really easy:

1. Grab the Pondering with a Purpose Badge (in her sidebar)
2. Look at the week's prompt
3. Post something on your blog that relates to the prompt - it can be a story, a poem, a picture -- anything you want it to be.

5. Go check out the other bloggers who have added their links to the list.
6. AND most of all.... Have fun!

This Week's prompt:   New

New talents, those picked up late in life or learned from my kids - going to have to think about this one.

I think the main thing that I have just recently become interested in would be photography. Daughter got me a camera for Christmas a few years ago and I enjoy playing with it quite a bit. At this point I would not say that I am very "talented" at it - but it is more of an ongoing learning process.

Blogging - I learned from my dil and now it's a very big part of my life. I enjoy it and look forward to reading everyone's comments every day.

I really can't think of anything else at the moment and not really sure either would count as talents but hey, that's what I'm sticking with!

Chats on the Farmhouse Porch

It's time to head over to Patrice's porch for the weekly chat.Wendell is with us today! Don't know about anybody else but I've kind of missed him.
Questions

  1. What's the last thing that made you cry? I do not remember the last time that I cried. I tend to keep things to myself.
  2. Have you ever had any small pets, other than cats or dogs? Do farm animal count? Ducks, rabbits, chickens, lambs, or goats? If so, then yes, lots of them.
  3. Waffles or pancakes? Waffles - I DETEST pancakes.
  4. Do you like politics? We don't need to know who you want to vote for if you are in the US, facing the upcoming election- just asking if you find the whole thing interesting. I don't like politics - it tends to bore me - but I do try to keep up so I have a good idea of what I'm voting for.
  5. Please fill in the blanks: If only I could earn a living by crocheting then I could stay home every day.

Hodgepodge

Welcome back to the Wednesday Hodgepodge! Be sure to add your link to the bottom of Joyce's post and then go visit the neighbors. After all, that's part of the fun!

1.  ARE YOU READY FOR SOME FOOTBALL?  The NFL is back in action along with all the college teams.  Are you a fan?  Who do you root for?  If you're not a fan what do you do while the rest of America watches Saturday, Sunday, Monday night, and now Thursday night games? Sorry - not a fan AT ALL. I do what I always do - crochet, reading, cooking and some of the Food Network.

2. What's something I'll always find in your closet? Lots of black and white and then lots of brown and green. Those tend to be my favorite colors for clothing. You'll also find a variety of purses, luggage and even some prom dresses of my daughter's - and both kids' graduation robes!

3. Share one of your earliest memories. Stirring apple butter in a HUGE cast iron kettle, outside over a fire at my grandma's house.

4. What circus act best describes your week so far? Juggling, as always.

5. What's a food you disliked as a child but you love now? squash

6.  Describe your summer in three words. hot, dry, and unproductive (bad year for the garden)

7.  Where were you on September 11, 2001? Will you do anything special to mark the day this year? I was at work and the whole building spent the entire day in the breakroom in front of the TV. I did not do anything special this year.

8.  Insert your own random thought here.I love the cooler weather we're having and seeping with the windows open - no air, no heat. I'm afraid we won't have a really pretty fall here because of the drought but at least the temps are better.

Coffee Chats

The coffee chat is back! If you'd like to join, head over to Leslie's at Time out for Mom.

  The topic is: Tips
Let's see, what insightful tip can I send out to the cyberworld this morning? I'm fighting a cold and my head is a little fuzzy but I'll try to come up with something.
Tip 1: When fighting a cold and all you want to do is sleep - try a cup of espresso! It works wonders. I actually made it until 10:00 p.m. last night.
Tip 2: When you have hard water, really hard - the kind that plugs up your coffee pot - white vinegar works wonders. Run equal parts of vinegar and water through once a week and it keeps the pot working - otherwise, it tends to take forever to make a pot of coffee and when you're as addicted as me - you don't want to wait that long!
Tip 3: Get a grinder. Daughter got me one last year and it is AMAZING! I never realized the difference that fresh ground coffee makes but let me tell you, it’s just awesome. Not to mention the fact that you can grind it really fine to make your espresso too.

1. What is your favorite memory you made while on walk? I used to go on hikes all the time with my ex - before we were married. There's a State Park called Siloam Springs that we both enjoyed.

2. Do you prefer to live in the city, suburbs or country?  Why? I like living in the country, although I now live in town (if you can call 400 people a town). I like it in the country because it's quiet and there are no neighbors to bother you. I don't think I could live in an actual city.

3. Post the cutest kid/pet/whatever picture you have taken lately? I'm not at home so I can't pull up any pictures right now.

4. What is your favorite recipe made with apples? Apple butter - and it's about time to be making some.

And don't forget to add a 5th Question on your own blog so we can answer as we hop around!

Fall weather is here in IL and I have my first cold. I started coughing Friday afternoon, was miserable all day Saturday, finally took some Niquil and went to bed and didn't get up till 9:30 Sunday morning - and I'm usually up by 5 every day, no matter what. Then I went back to bed at 1 p.m., got up at 5, back to bed at 7 and slept all night. This morning, it feels like my head is in a fog!  After all that, my question is: Do you get colds easily or are you lucky enough to bypass them?

Pondering With a Purpose

Thursday again! Time to do a little "pondering" with Brenda from Fiction With a Purpose.

Her rules are really easy:

1. Grab the Pondering with a Purpose Badge (in her sidebar)

6. AND most of all.... Have fun!

This Week's prompt:   Getting Away?
For me getting away always means the mountains of VA/TN. There is no other place like it. I love to get up early in the mornings and watch the mist rise up off the mountains. There's lots of words I could use to describe it: peaceful, tranquil, awesome, beautiful,  inspiring,  magnificent, calming, serene, soothing........ the list goes on. But for me the one word that really describes it is "home." I haven't lived there in decades but it has always been and will always be home to me. Daughter and I are going at the end of this month. I'll take lots of pictures.

Hodgepodge

Welcome back to the Wednesday Hodgepodge! Be sure to add your link to the bottom of Joyce's post and then go visit the neighbors. After all, that's part of the fun!

1. In your opinion what's the most important job in the world? Oh, and parenting is a given so besides parenting, what's the most important job in the world? If not parenting, I would have to go with teachers, especially Elementary School - the formation years - not that all teachers/professors are not important but I think the foundation needs to be built early if at all possible.
2. Share a favorite or not so favorite memory from a childhood birthday. Birthday's were not a big deal in my family. Presents were not given, if fact it wasn't often that you even got a cake.
3. Peanut butter-crunchy or smooth? The crunchier the better!
4. William Butler Yeats is credited as saying, "Happiness is neither virtue nor pleasure nor this thing nor that but simply growth, We are happy when we are growing." Your thoughts? I've never really thought about it, but I'm not sure that we do. I think all experiences make us grow, not just the "happy" ones. I've grown a lot over the years and I think the saddest/hardest times are those that made me grow the most - so I guess I disagree.
5. What's something that makes you cringe? I've said this often, but the way that college students write makes me cringe.
6. Name a song that always puts you in a good mood? Country Roads - John Denver.
7. The answer is yes. What's the question? Wouldn't you like to know!(In other words - there are just TOO many possibilities for that one.)
8. Insert your own random thought here.I haven't posted a picture of my grandson lately so I'm going to take this opportunity to do it. Here he is sitting on a wine barrel in Venice. I think it is just awesome that son and dil get to travel the way they do!

Six Word Saturday

To participate all you need to do is describe your life (or something) in a phrase using just six words. For more information, go to Show My Face. and Cate will explain it. Add an image, a video, a song, nothing.

I'm selling poppies for VFW today.
Then working for VFW reunion dinner.
Tomorrow going to Labor Day celebration.
Lots of flea markets to browse.
Hoping to find an old canner.
Daughter wants to learn to can.
Would rather her have old one.
Think they are heavier than new.
Don't make stuff really good anymore.
Mine is probably 60 years old.
I've had it 30 at least.
It came from my granny's house.
It still works like a trooper.
I call it my "old faithful."

How's that for Six Word Saturday!
