Pondering With a Purpose

Thursday again! Time to do a little "pondering" with Brenda from Fiction With a Purpose.

Her rules are really easy:

1. Grab the Pondering with a Purpose Badge (in her sidebar)
2. Look at the week's prompt
3. Post something on your blog that relates to the prompt - it can be a story, a poem, a picture -- anything you want it to be.
4. Go back here and add the URL from your post to the linky list on Brenda's.
5. Go check out the other bloggers who have added their links to the list.
6. AND most of all.... Have fun!

This Week's prompt:  Siblings
I grew up being the youngest of 4. My brother is the oldest, my sisters followed. We were all two years apart. The three of us girls did torment my brother a lot. I can remember catching him asleep and putting makeup on him - things like that.

My biggest memory of growing up is that of trying to follow in their footsteps. My sister who was two years older than me was very intelligent. In fact, she had close to a genius IQ. While I have never had much trouble with schoolwork, it did not come that easy for me. She never brought home a book - I would have stacks. I actually had teachers say to me that they didn't know why I didn't do better on something since my sister had excelled on it - in front of the whole class. Talk about embarrassing! But that changed when I was about 12.

I lost my oldest sister in a car accident when I was 12. Both me and my next sister were badly injured in the accident and in and out of hospitals for years after. For a while we had teachers come to the house so we wouldn't fall behind. I learned everything from her teachers at the same time she did - I really had no choice - I was in a hospital bed and couldn't get away. But it helped me breeze through high school.

A few years later, I ended up losing that sister to drugs so it is just me and my brother left. The older we get, the closer it seems that we get.

  1. Your story gave me the chills.... I am so sorry for your losses....
My oldest brother is also a genius and I clearly remember the exact same comments. I have two more in the middle - there were 4 of us in 4-1/2 years. Now it is my eldest and I that are really close.
Strange how as we get older our lives vary so greatly....seems like we grew up in totally different homes.

    Thanks for Pondering with me!

  2. I'm so sorry for the losses in your family. That is something that stays with us for life. I couldn't help but think that your teachers shouldn't have been comparing you to your sister! I have found that my life is also very different from my two brothers, even though we did spend our formative years together.

My blog is now "private." Email me at belange71@yahoo if you would like to have an invitation to have access. Have a good weekend!

  3. I am sorry for the loss of your sisters...so much tragedy in one family. It would be interesting to hear what you have to say about those times. I bet it could help a lot of people. Thank you for sharing what you did.

    Visiting from "Pondering."
